We arrived at lunchtime & found a nice Thai restaurant on the Washington University campus, then enjoyed some shopping. Star Clipper is a great mix of comics, art books, vinyl toys & Japanese pop culture stuff. They had a ton of Uglydolls:

And a manga with Japanese Octavio!!! (Manga World, 2003)

After a brief stop at the hotel, we headed out to the zoo. The weather was quite cool & misty, so there weren't many animals on display. But we enjoyed the ones that we did see!
First stop was to see the big cats. They had a very handsome lion:

Who didn't appear to be getting along with his lady friend:

And some very rare & endangered Amur leopards. (If you saw Planet Earth, you saw a mother & cubs filmed in the wild for the first time!)

These guys look just like they're on the African safari, no? Except for that jerk on the left waiting at the door to be let inside. D'oh!

A big brute of a camel, with his harem in the background:

This peacock kindly posed for a close-up:

And we watched this hyacinth macaw expertly bob for an apple, then devour it:

The toucan was very lively, hopping from branch to branch. Hence the bluriness. I'll refrain from making a Froot Loops joke.

This bittern allowed us to approach it, and just continued singing his one haunting note:

The penguins were active and fun to watch:

Well...some of them were!

And last but not least, we tamed a giant rhinoceros beetle!
