Random Hallmark Moments: Postcards

Today I was invited by our Consumer Research team to participate in a fun activity; a group of consumers had sent postcards to us, describing their hometown & what they love about it, and they each asked us one question. So we got to read them all, select a few, and write responses. (Okay, and draw responses too.)
Not only was it fun, and interesting to see what they wanted to know. How do we use social media—and do we realize its importance? What do we like best about KC? Why did we choose to work for Hallmark? Are we just a huge corporation, or do we really care?
I wrote responses off the top of my head, talking about how inspired I am by my talented coworkers, how well Hallmark has treated me all these years, all the fun things to do in KC, and how each employee is just like our consumers: with real lives, feelings, and relationships—and the same need to strengthen them by expressing caring thoughts. We couldn't do our jobs so well if it weren't authentic.
As I did this, I started to feel a strong sense of gratitude. It was a great chance to take a step back and appreciate the uniqueness of my job, and its importance. In this age of virtual communication, it really does make you feel special to receive a card. It implies extra effort and care.
I was really glad I participated and hope they'll do another round. Only a few of us attended, but I think everyone at Hallmark should do this regularly. There is so much to learn from our fans...
