DC Disasters

Don't get me wrong, this trip to DC has been fantastic overall, but not without its trials.

Exhibit A: Unfortunately there was a little excitement on campus Thursday night. It's terrible that three marines lost their lives, but we are very lucky that this shooting was targeted rather than random. I can't imagine if the gunman had opened fire at the crowded graduation ceremony on Friday morning, with over 250 elite law enforcements officers and FBI agents, their family and closest friends, and leaders including the Director of the FBI himself.
Exhibit B: An ill-fated trip to an Italian restaurant last night, resulting in a reprisal of my only other DC experience, circa 1989: food poisoning resulting from a pasta dish both times. I can't accurately describe how sick I've been for the last 17 hours (and counting) without inducing sympathy vomiting. A sleepless night led to a Saturday of lying in bed at the hotel, my only exercise being the sprints to the bathroom, for which I've surely earned a land-speed record.

Exhibit C: this was to be our full day exploring the city. The Natural History Museum's giant squid, orchid show, photography show, butterfly garden, and dinosaurs have been racing around in my head all day, taunting me. (Not to mention the art museums!) I tried to rally, I got up and showered (getting sick before, during and after)—I couldn't afford to be trapped on the Metro with no bathroom for the 30 minute ride into the city.
Exhibit D: after two years of no snow at home, Mother Nature is gearing up for a Round 3 storm, hitting KC tonight, and DC early Monday. US Airways, in all their awfulness, suggested proactively moving our flights out as late as 3/28. But will provide little guidance on the best course if action, to cover their... well, you know. All flights for tonight had sold out. Monday too. I will be gambling on my original flight for tomorrow, and hoping I don't have to curl up on the cold, hard floor of Reagan National airport.
