Screenland at the Symphony

Tonight Britten, Christy, David and I met up at The Mixx for dinner and then headed to the Kauffman (my FIFTH time in under two weeks, if you're counting. But remember: two of those were free, and two were nearly free, and this was a deal. Call it a win-win-win-win-win!).
This was the first in a series: scenes from Hitchcock's classic films played on a huge screen while the Kansas City Symphony performed the soundtracks live. We were able to score half-price tickets through Livingsocial, and B and I had front-row seats in the Grand Tier. High up in the stratosphere, but a great vantage point to see the screen and a birds-eye view of the performers.
The show was tricky; as when watching a subtitled film, when your eyes want to simultaneously see the action and read the dialogue. Here, I wanted to watch the performers as if to prove to myself that this was truly live, because they sounded so good that it was easy to get sucked into the films and forget what a rare treat this was. Being relatively new to the symphony, I get a kick out of seeing which instruments produce which sounds—some still surprise me, like the range from a violin.
The show wrapped with my favorite Hitch film, North by Northwest. It was awesome and surreal to hear such familiar music played live. And it renewed my interest in a road trip to see Mount Rushmore! The show included:
To Catch a Thief
Strangers on a Train
Hitchcock: By Himself
Dial M for Murder
North by Northwest
I bumped into Peter F and Joanne E (and Peter's mom) after the show—they loved the show as much as we did, and I was able to harass him again about leaving Hallmark without telling anyone it was coming.
Then the four of us headed to The Jacobsen for mint juleps (it was Derby Day, after all). We watched Orb take the win on replay, and enjoyed some fancy snacks. Fun night!
