Rediscovering Kansas City: The Nelson

Eric Van Wagner* drove into town for the weekend, so I attempted to show him the best of what KC has to offer. In fact, going to the museum was a bit of a wake-up call for me; the Nelson is really a treasure, and I don't get over there often enough!

*he's my buddy from high school who used to borrow his Mom's mini van & drive a bunch of us up to Rush concerts in Cleveland.
These next two photos are Eric's...and a great reminder to look for the unexpected shots!
We bumped into Steve & Milo King while having lunch in Rozelle Court:
I'll be posting more of my favorite objects d'art soon. But here are some details from a very large Chinese screen:
Hand-painted kanji (I've tried brushwork, and it's seriously difficult. This piece blows my mind.)
Kanji carved in the base of a statue:
Eric & me with a Daibutsu (tiny, compared to the one in Kamakura!)
There were two adorable 65+ year old ladies ahead of us, and we offered to take their photo together. This quickly turned into a 20 minute conversation with Betty & Muriel! Betty lives in the KC area now, and Muriel was visiting from South Dakota. They had been friends for many, many years and enjoyed traveling together. They had recently returned from Italy, and had a trip to Russia up next. Muriel & I talked Japan. Turns out she hasn't been there, but her brother has been working there for several years & will be returning to the US next year. I encouraged her to go!!! And, of course, a Hallmark connection. Betty's daughter-in-law is a real estate attorney for Hallmark. All-in-all, a delightful conversation & we were happy to have me them!
