Life in the Digital World

Technology is amazing. I went stand up paddleboarding (aka SUP) for the first time on Friday, then again on Sunday. (And it was a BLAST, though I'll save that for another post.) I shared a few photos on Facebook so that my friends who were there with me could see them. They had simple labels like "paddleboarding" or "SUP".
Within 24 hours, I received this bit of marketing from backcountry.com: paddleboards & kayaks! I do subscribe to their emails, but had never been served up SUPs before. They were on to me.
And 24 hours after that, REI followed suit!
It's all good by me; I subscribe to both sites and welcome the chance to find discounted gear to add to my ever-growing repertoire of hobbies. This definitely had a "big brother is watching" aspect to it, but because I subscribe to them, and because it's actually relevant to me, it's welcomed. I think it's fascinating how advertising is evolving to be more targeted and specific.
