Weezer

I've always kind of liked Weezer, but never been a huge huge fan... until the recent release of  "(If you're wondering if I want you to) I want you to." Pure pop perfection. And I also love the photo on the CD cover. So tonight I headed down to the River Market area north of downtown Kansas City to hear them live. They were fun, but they used MY song to have fans come up from the crowd and sing it. Seriously? Thanks for ruining the ONLY song I REALLY wanted to hear, guys! They were otherwise great, though. I'd see them again.

Rediscovering Kansas City: Steamboat Arabia

The Steamboat Arabia museum
(with some sundry flea market items out front):
Replica of the original paddle wheels:
Colored glass salvaged from the boat, 45 feet under the mud:
The Arabia hit a tree snag in the Missouri River & sank in 1856 with over 200 tons of cargo on board. It was recovered by a local team in 1988 & they are still cleaning & restoring articles from the boat!
It's the world's largest collection of frontier supplies.
the boilers:
Seriously, check out the inseam on this guy (not Eric, the other guy):
The only casualty of the ship, a mule now known as...
wait for it..."Lawrence of the Arabia."

tons of fresh fruits & veggies...
"Kansas City Seafood." Huh.
Eric checks out all the specialty teas.
(We're talking stuff like "carrot cake" & "coconut truffle"):
Huh huh..."dill weed."
More spices. They smelled SOOOOO GOOD!
Burgers, brats, sausages & turkey legs:
Mmm...italian sausage with peppers & onions

better living through chemistry

Today I was treated to a great lunch at Blue Nile Cafe, complete with fresh-brewed Ethiopian coffee from a contraption that made me feel like I was back in 10th grade chemistry class. It was strong, but so smooth that we drank it black. Perfect! (The manufacturer's site proclaims, "No coffee, no pals." Indeed.)
Then we picked up some fresh fruit & veggies at the farmer's market and toured the Steamboat Arabia museum. Highlights of the video: one of the treasure hunters ate 100+ year old pickles. And the guys' wives apparently "started talking to them again" when they started uncovering the treasure. Gotta love explorers with a sense of humor!
