True story: I met up with Rafael (who was visiting from Rochester), Brett & Yukiko for dinner, and finally got a chance to try ABC Cafe. It's so close I can walk there, and I've read great reviews. Supposedly very authentic Chinese food. I'm certainly no expert, but given that it's unlike any Chinese restaurant I've tried outside of Little China in Los Angeles or New York City, I'm guessing that's pretty accurate.
Only Yukiko had been there before, so she had some favorites and did most of the selections. She did a great job. Not sure I would have ordered turnip cakes on my own, but they were my favorites—or at least a close tie with the salt & pepper, whole fried shrimp. (You can eat the entire shrimp, which is very lightly breaded... eyes, head, legs, shell and all!) We even bravely tried the chicken feet in XO sauce, since none of us had ever had them. The sauce was good and flavorful. The feet were sort of skin with gelatinous texture, little meat, and small bones. Probably not something I'd order again, but I ate three of them, and was glad I gave it a go.
The night's special for the new year was a huge plate of chopped, lightly fried whole lobster, with a rich sauce and sautéed onions. YUM. Overall, the whole meal was very rich and filling. Plus, we kinda pigged out. Plus, everyone came back to my house for wine & catching up... 'til 1 am. Which resulted in:
Yes, my feet felt like they were made of lead this morning. It's a good thing Taylor had a bit of energy (buoyed by the fact that I made him run BEFORE he was treated to his breakfast.)In observance of the first day of the year of the snake, here are a few snake stories from posts past (yes, yes... I happen to love snakes and am delighted whenever I find them.):
