Lionhearted Bruce

I saw this great Scottish terrier logo in a magazine, and sent it to Madeline and Diane.
Based on recent events, Diane said that she thought Bruce would prefer to have a possum in his mouth then keys. Bruce cornered a possum in their backyard recently, and he received some scratches on his nose So of course I had to draw this…

Dog-n-Jog 25th Anniversary

Today marked the 25th anniversary of Dog-n-Jog (and this year is our Humane Society's centennial, too!). Like last year, Dad, Diane & Lindsey drove in from Ohio to attend the event with me, and help wrangle my crazy dogs. Check out this great photo from Thomas Photographic—Taylor's got three legs off the ground and is pulling like crazy—which he did for the whole mile! We didn't manage to place, as the KC Track Club has joined in and they are posting 5-minute miles (our fastest-ever has been 6:34), so our days on the podium are over, but it didn't detract from a great time.
I'm glad my family & friends enjoyed the event, and as usual it is fun to see a sea of my t-shirt designs taking over the Plaza!
I plan to post my own photos & write about the event soon, but for now, here are some from the KC Star: Volume 1  /  Volume 2  and from Thomas Photographic, and an article.

And Then There Were Turtles

As if Jen & Greg's place wasn't cool enough, the previous homeowner had left then a large cement enclosure, overgrown with plants—the perfect habitat for their collection of box turtles! My dogs had only seen a turtle once, this year on Easter, while hiking at Shawnee Mission Park with Madeline & Bruce. They were *fascinated*.
Aki, who is only one-quarter of my body weight, suddenly became so strong I could barely contain her! She is a mighty hunter for sure!
Bruce: Which one do you want, Aki?
Aki: Sorry, Bruce. They're ALL MINE.
The three amigos, looking like excited lil' kids:
She almost bit it's head off. Thank goodness for lightning-fast turtle reflexes!!!
It was time to go, so the happy Shibas piled in the car...
And in merely a few minutes... ZONKED!!!
Somehow they managed to be wide-awake by the time they got home. Jen sent us home with TREATS—GOOD ONES!!!
So entranced he cannot hold up his fat head to make eye contact:
So yeah, all in all, about as good as a doggy day gets. And for me, having all this fun after surviving a Warrior Dash? Priceless!

The Chase is On!

At one point during our visit to Jen & Greg's house, my Shibas got a wild hair. They had spent the afternoon exploring the large property, and had access to many different areas of the yard, a lower patio, a second-story deck, and much more. We were talking as they were mulling around. Then suddenly... Aki darted out from the brush, having run up a steep hill from the lower patio, bursting forth unexpectedly:
And not a second later, a second idiot emerged in pursuit:
The chase was on! And it was drawing a crowd!
After a few laps around the yard in erratic circles, the big dogs retired to their swimming pool, and my guys relaxed in the shade under our chairs. As if nothing had happened. Until...

Party at City Bitty Farm

Jen, who sits across from me at work, loves to trade naughty dog stories with me. She has 3 mixed breeds, Crockett and the girls: Banzai and Ninja. With names like that, you should know they spell trouble. (Can you say, dog climbed up on the car & onto the roof of the garage? Or got lost at Shawnee Mission Park for over 5 hours?) We vowed that our dogs should never meet, lest they trade ideas to take their badness to new heights!
Alas, Ninja and Banzai were celebrating their second birthday this weekend, and she invited us all over, and I couldn't pass it up. I'm glad I didn't... the dogs were *miraculously* well-behaved together, and it was a gorgeous afternoon to spend lounging outside under big shady trees, with our feet dangling in the dogs' kiddie pool. Greg showed us his green house full of cute lil' plants and they sent me home with an aloe plant (for my Warrior Dash sunburn) and a ton of micro-green mixes. Not to mention goody bags for the pups! We're totally spoiled now!!!
Ninja & Banzai can't wait!
Bruce & Aki
Taylor quickly locates the people food... but then chooses affection:
He gets a little too fresh...
And Bruce attempts to reclaim his lady!
Jennifer & Crockett
Fresh microgreens: mizuna, peas, radish, pac choi, red cabbage, mustard greens and more!
Then Greg brought out the cake from Three Dog Bakery, and suddenly he was the most popular guy in the yard...
WE CAN HAZ CAKE TOO?
Will levitate for cake.
And then the Warrior hat came out...
Crockett always looks so happy!
Ninja too!
Banzai looks appropriately embarrassed...
Time for a swim!
EWWW!!! THIS WATER IS *WET*!
The "you'll pay for this" face
Stay down, Bruce—NOOOOOO
More posts to come...
'Til then, check out Greg & Jen on this urban farm site
