Divemaster Exam Emminent

   Divemaster exam tomorrow morning! #mathchallenged #20yearssincemathclass #determinedtoconquer
Here's one of the important things I must remember: because the air pressure at sea level is one atmosphere (14.7 PSI), you have to remember to add a one every time you descend another atmosphere. So 33 feet is 2 atm, and 66 feet is three. You divide the number by 33 for saltwater (34 for fresh), and then add the one to get the number of atmospheres.
I also need to remember that the weight of 1 ft.³ of salt water is 64 pounds. And for freshwater, it's 62.4 pounds. Also, water moves heat away from the body 20 times faster than air. And sound travels 4 times faster in water than air, because water molecules are more dense and elastic than air. That makes it difficult to determine from which direction the sound is coming… And often makes a sound appeared to be coming from overhead.
Thanks to Chris for this! ;)
I've spent the last few hours reviewing the physics and math behind dive theory. And by some not-so-small miracle, I think I understand it. Let's hope I can remember it long enough to take the exam tomorrow morning.
And let's hope this is my reaction after the exam. Can't wait to break into the bottle of champagne I've got chilling in the fridge!

Diving Day

Scuba Power! Christy snapped this goofball photo of me after our two Discover sessions. We had 18 more adventurers dive in, and several seem interested in becoming certified. Yay! I LOVE seeing people take to this amazing sport. That makes 45 people that Christy & I have brought in so far.
Time to hop in! The water may look warm, but even with the new heater, it's only 77 degrees so far (better than 68 last time!). It really is amazing how much difference a few degrees makes. Water absorbs heat 20x faster than air, which explains why.
Remember these important rules:

Time to walk on water!
I'm still trying to get over this ridiculous sinus infection, so I only spent an hour shivering in the pool before I got out, showered and changed, and sat to observe and draw fishies. (See earlier post.) It was SO hard to resist staying in the pool longer, but I'm trying to fulfill my Divemaster code by knowing when to say when. I could not, however, resist having dinner and a Blue Moon with orange slice afterwards. Vitamin C is good for you, right?
Then I headed home to watch the men's slopestyle finals and equally torture myself with wanting to be on a mountain again. NOW.

Diving with a hot Frenchman?

Mais oui!

What's that you say? How were the fish?
What fish? I didn't notice any fish... ;)

Seriously, though, Stefan couldn't be a better dive master! He & his whole crew were a blast.

House hunting

Just before going up for my safety stop, I spied this crab, inspecting a potential new conch-house! How I wish I could hang out longer under the sea, and observe all the fascinating creatures longer...

Party at City Bitty Farm

Jen, who sits across from me at work, loves to trade naughty dog stories with me. She has 3 mixed breeds, Crockett and the girls: Banzai and Ninja. With names like that, you should know they spell trouble. (Can you say, dog climbed up on the car & onto the roof of the garage? Or got lost at Shawnee Mission Park for over 5 hours?) We vowed that our dogs should never meet, lest they trade ideas to take their badness to new heights!
Alas, Ninja and Banzai were celebrating their second birthday this weekend, and she invited us all over, and I couldn't pass it up. I'm glad I didn't... the dogs were *miraculously* well-behaved together, and it was a gorgeous afternoon to spend lounging outside under big shady trees, with our feet dangling in the dogs' kiddie pool. Greg showed us his green house full of cute lil' plants and they sent me home with an aloe plant (for my Warrior Dash sunburn) and a ton of micro-green mixes. Not to mention goody bags for the pups! We're totally spoiled now!!!
Ninja & Banzai can't wait!

Taylor quickly locates the people food... but then chooses affection:
He gets a little too fresh...
And Bruce attempts to reclaim his lady!
Jennifer & Crockett
Fresh microgreens: mizuna, peas, radish, pac choi, red cabbage, mustard greens and more!
Then Greg brought out the cake from Three Dog Bakery, and suddenly he was the most popular guy in the yard...
WE CAN HAZ CAKE TOO?
Will levitate for cake.
And then the Warrior hat came out...
Crockett always looks so happy!
Ninja too!
Banzai looks appropriately embarrassed...
Time for a swim!
EWWW!!! THIS WATER IS *WET*!
The "you'll pay for this" face
Stay down, Bruce—NOOOOOO
More posts to come...
'Til then, check out Greg & Jen on this urban farm site

Happy Hounds

To lighten my mood, I headed over to Shawnee Mission Park shortly after I returned from the vet this morning, hoping that Joni & Alan, Wager, Kippy & Asher; and Kay and Bella; and Kristi and Brandy would still be there. And what luck! The park was PACKED, but just as I drove up a parking spot opened... right next to Joni's car!
The Shibas and I jogged down to the beach, and we met them on the hill. Everyone had a blast, and all dogs got along great. The Borders swam, and my guys skirted the shoreline. Taylor spent most of the time off-leash and did VERY well with recall! I never had to "go get him", a real milestone. It helps to be surrounded by awesome people with well-behaved and balanced dogs!
